Grenoble, France is a beautiful city tucked away in the French Alps. It has been a fortified town for several centuries, because it is strategically located and sits in a key location in the mountains.
This page is dedicated to pictures of Grenoble that I took there on a recent business trip.
I took these pictures primarily with a Sony Cyber-Shot. It has some neat features like a pano mode that lets you take sweeping vista shots. The only bad thing about it is that some of those shots tend to render white clouds with a pink hue.

These are some shots of the telepherique (also known as an aerial tramway or cable car) in Grenoble, France. It takes you up to the Bastille and the cool thing about it is the unique design of the cars -- they are a set of 4 "bubbles" that hang from cables. The ride is a bit scary, though. You get to go over the river as you are going up the mountainside. I hope the cables were checked for safety recently!

In September 1692, Vauban made a stop in Grenoble. The French Kingdom was facing multiple assaults from the Duchy of Savoie.
Louis XIV's lieutenant-general inspected the Alpine border's defensive line. His judgment on the fortifications of the capital of the Dauphine was harsh: "The Bastille is just a poor enclave or rather a bauble, closed but without rhyme or reason, nor any other precaution than a badly flanked and badly built wall incapable of resisting cannon fire.
A winemaker is the governor, or at least he has the keys, with twelve cows and eight goats, a mare and a donkey for the whole garrison."
The city defence system needed to be reinforced: Vauban designed a master plan to overhaul and reinforce the fortifications but it was never implemented.
The Fort de la Bastille there today was built primarily between 1823-1847.
